Do I need planning permission for a pergola?

Planning permission can be a mind field so we’ve put together a simple guide so you can easily find out whether your pergola needs planning permission.

It’s worth starting by saying there are very few occasions where you’d need planning permission for any of the aluminium pergolas that we sell - they aren’t of a huge scale!! Good news!

Ultimately, Under the Permitted Development Rights, you can build a garden pergola as long as it complies with certain rules. These include:

  • You don’t use more than 50% of the land around the original house for outbuildings and garden buildings

  • You can’t put a pergola forward of the front wall of the house, known as the principal elevation

  • It can be no higher than four metres, or three meters if you are putting it up within two metres of the boundary with your neighbour

  • You can’t add verandas, balconies or raised platforms so you can’t then add a pergola to one of these

The exception to these rules would be if you live in a listed building, if you live in a World Heritage Site, AONB or national park as that means you will need permission for any structures.

We hope this has provided useful insight and as ever, if you have any questions do get in touch.
